Why can’t the government force medical insurance companies to accept pre existing conditions?

medical insurance

There is talk of the government making a law requiring all citizens to purchase medical insurance coverage. How can they do this? What about those who refuse to buy it? Will it cause insurance companies to accept pre existing conditions?

they could. the reason they dont accept preexisting conditions is because then there would be no point in having insurance. you could easily abuse the system-if you do get sick, then buy it then instead of paying premiums while you are healthy. and then the insurance companies would go broke or atleast have to raise the rates for everyone else.

what i think they should mandate though is that if you got an illness under your previous insurance, if you change insurances they must provide at minimum the same coverage as you were getting before.

as far as mandating it, i think they should because a lot of people who dont have insurance end up getting treatment anyway in one way or another and dont pay their bills so then the rest of us have to pick up the tab

    Excellent question.

I have a congenital heart condition. It’s never caused me any major problems, and is unlikely to be the cause of my death.

In fact the doctors say my heart is doing fine, since it has coped with one full term pregnancy, carrying extra weight (since I am just over 200 pounds), and a 4 hour brain-operation under a general anasthetic.

But its that extra weight and my heart that the insurance companies dont like. I get turned down EVERY time I apply.

It’s not like I smoke or drink alcohol. I dont. But those people who do, get accepted for health insurance every day. So why dont I?
    I call it DISCRIMINATION!!!!

Great insight, Cindy! Personally, when it comes to healthcare reform, period, I think that is exactly all the government does….TALK! If ppl can’t afford to purchase insurance, how can they? Folks are struggling to keep homes, and jobs, let alone being forced to umbrella another bill, no matter how necessary. Then, of course, dealing with pre-existing issues, and the premiums customers will contend with, and insurance companies don’t want to accept. We are in a serious healthcare crisis in this country that is going to be dwindle into our kiddies laps if we don’t agree on a realistic solution. Gosh, great questions! My best, Cindy.
