Who determines the number of medical school seats in medical schools in Canada and the US?

medical
R J asked:

I have heard that the number of seats is limited due to professional medical organizations limiting the universities. I wanted to know if there was any basis to this.

My guess is it’s due to funding, space and the amount of professors.

The school determines the number of seats it will provide and allocates the resources to accommodate that number and the LCME accredits the school for that number of students. The school can decrease the number of seats if it wants, but it has to go through another accreditation process if it wants to increase the number of seats. Increasing the number of seats means increasing all of the education resources –buildings, library, instructors, support staff–even parking spaces.

The accreditation process is expensive and normally, med schools go through the process every ten years. Many schools are increasing or are planning to increase their capacity. There are five new med schools in the planning process. The bottom line is that there will be about 1,000 new seats becoming available in the near future.
