What happened to “major medical” insurance coverage?

medical insurance
Huggy asked:

When I was a cub, my parents had “major medical” insurance coverage. They paid for routine medical expenses out of pocket. Only major medical expenses were paid by insurance.

IMO, the less people pay in out-of-pocket costs, the more people will use and abuse the insurance coverage — and drive up the cost.

I see what you’re getting at, but that hasn’t been the case for veterinary care or dental care, both of which are largely paid for out of pocket.

It seems to have disappeared as the government started calling the shots and making insurance cover everything for birth control counseling, Viagra, and numerous other semi-useless thinkgs. I we could only purchase catastrophic health insurance, the cost would go way down for everything. Doctors wouldn’t feel free charging over $170.00 for an appointment that lasts 5 minutes.

You are right on this, it is the fact that people do not see the real cost of health care that drives up the costs.

And major / catastrophic coverage went away when the government started regulating the insurance companies and mandating what every insurance policy has to offer.

It is a real indictment of government involvement in any private business.

you might be onto something here… perhaps a govt option could be crafted something like that… a safety net for the working poor rather than cradle-to-grave care for everyone?

hey, i’m open to any reasonable suggestion that isn’t based on tax cuts for the wealthy.

That’s it you are paying for major medical, bot you are getting minor medical coverage.

everything went sideways, when the govt got involved…i remember, when my sister was born…my father showed me the seven dollar check he wrote to the hospital…this was in the seventies…someone, not the ins. co’s,screwed something up….
