If you do not complete your private pilot training (or sport or recreational licenses depending on what you are going for) within two years (14 CFR 61.19 (b) stipulates 24 calendar months), you will need to request a new student pilot certificate. The medical certificate portion of the document is still valid for an additional 12 calendar months if you are under the age of 40. It is the same document, but I believe they are considered separate certificates.
