Is the student pilot certificate and medical certificate good for 3 years?

medical
Mower asked:

In the far/aim the student pilot certificate is good for 2 years a 3rd class medical is good for 3 years if you are under 40. But my medical and student pilot certificate are both one document. So do they expire at different times or at the same time? The far/aim does not address this that I can find. Thanks!

It is the same document, but I believe they are considered separate certificates. If you do not complete your private pilot training (or sport or recreational licenses depending on what you are going for) within two years (14 CFR 61.19 (b) stipulates 24 calendar months), you will need to request a new student pilot certificate. The medical certificate portion of the document is still valid for an additional 12 calendar months if you are under the age of 40.

Student pilot certificate is valid for 24 calendar months.

3rd class medical durations have just changed. If you are under 40 years of age, it is now valid for 60 calendar months (over 40 is still 24 calendar months)

Although they are on the same document, they are independent of each other. On a side note, the new medical certificate duration rules are not even in the 2009 FAR/AIM. See the source link for more information.

As of July 24th, a third class medical lasts five years.(if under 40)There is no change in the terms for medical certificates for pilots over the age of 40.
The student pilot certificate is only valid for 24 months.
If your student pilot certificate expires before you obtain your private, you can get another issued by the FSDO (free)or from a Designated Examiner (whom will charge a small fee)
