I am planning on applying to medical school sometime in the next year or two, but I am retaking at least three classes. I am wondering how would those retakes impact my application? Has anyone been through this situation?
It’s not going to look good. Medical schools look at both your ‘original’ grade that you got, and the ‘retaken’ grades. It’s not a very flattering thing to have on your application, let alone THREE classes retaken!
One friend of mine took a class over again, and he didn’t make it into the medical schools that he applied to, but he did make it into dental school.
Depends on the context. Did you get A’s the 2nd time around? How were your other grades? I dropped a class late in the semester so got an “Incomplete”. I took it again the next year and got an A. I got into a pretty good med school, but the rest of my grades and scores were pretty good, so I think they were willing to overlook that Incomplete.
If you do enough research you’ll encounter some medical school web sites that encourage applicants to repeat courses to improve their chances of being accepted. Retaking courses is so common that about the only way it would hurt you is to not score well in your final attempt.
Some schools will average the grades between the initial and the retaken course while others will only record the higher grade. Some schools will annotate your transcript that the course was retaken and some schools do not.
