How do you feel about medical students or residents being present at your baby’s birth?

Do you have a birth plan that says “essential personnel only”? Does it not matter which medical staff is there? I often read about uninvited relatives who want to be there at the birth but how about nonessential medical personnel? What are your thoughts on that? Just curious.

I had my daughter by a medical student who was in her training for c-section delivers..

I would have to say that I would have and did trust her decisions for she was highly knowlegable about her choosen field.. I liked her so much that she is my daughter’s god-mother…

In my new Ob- doctors practice intrins are a normal site… These future doctors have to be given the chance to learn and they need us to do so,…

I think as long as the information is educational and they interns are poliet what is the real issue with this?? I am not all that worried for everyone is intittled to a great education…

I would want an educated doctor to take care of my grandchilds birth, and with our practice how are any future doctors going to achive this??

I say talk to your doctor if you or anyone else finds this to be an issue, and tell them that only one or two can be present and trust me the doctor/residents will understand!!

    I don’t want them there.
Thinking about it now I feel like, its no big deal. But I know when I am laboring I don’t want people just standing around that don’t need to be there. Even relatives.

I especially don’t want them doing anything to me – especially anything with needles. I’ve had too many nurses assistants hurt the crap out of me trying to get to my veins! Only experienced people from now on for me!

How do you think doctors become doctors? They have to have real life experiences. If you don’t want residents and students at your birth, go to a non-teaching hospital. I’m a RN, would you want me taking care of you based solely on what I learned in a book?
