It's not fair, but that seems to be the path many have had to go to transfer over or get a coding job, since many doctor's offices don't want to take a chance with someone who isn't already familiar with the workings of a medical office environment. Even the AHIMA medical coding certification organization strongly suggests that you have at least 6 months-2 years of coding experience before they think you should try to take their exams.
